The Miami Beach PAL YDC/Mentoring group and Police Explorers assisted the Police Department with toy distribution to over 500 underprivileged children for the holidays, along with a cookie, hamburger and milk.

The Miami Beach Police Athletic League, Inc. held its 10th Annual Book Bag Giveaway – 500 book bags filled with new school supplies were given to underprivileged Miami Beach youngsters.

The Police Chief, along with PAL Board Members and PAL volunteers (Youth Director’s Council and Police Explorers) assisted with this wonderful event which was started 10 years ago as an Eagle Scout Project by Joey Daoud. Joey will also be on hand at this event as he is the current PAL Secretary, Co-Coordinator of the PAL Mentoring Program and Co-Advisor of the Youth Director’s Council.

Recipients of book bags were also treated to a slice of pizza and a drink.

The Miami Beach PAL Mentoring Program and Youth Director Council (YDC), headed by Lori Freedline and Joey Daoud, held a year end recognition event for the kids. After sharing a lunchtime meal together, they were given beautiful certificates to recognize their hard work and community service provided to the Miami Beach PAL, the City of Miami Beach and their residents, and the law enforcement community by volunteering thousands of hours this past school year.  Some of their volunteer events included:

For the past few months PAL has been hosting a mentoring program for high school and middle school kids to come together every Saturday, play games, have pizza, and watch educational videos on teen related issues.

The program grows each week with new kids, and will continue throughout the year.

The Miami Beach Youth Directors Council and Police Explorers recently helped the Miami Beach Coalition’s Sticker Shock program. The kids placed red tags on alcohol in participating stores to discourage people from buying it to give to minors.

Andrea slates a scene in front of the Tower of Terror

In January, 10 YDC kids went to Disney for the weekend to participate in Disney’s YES (Youth Educational Series) Program. On the first day they went to Disney’s Hollywood Studios, where they learned how movies are made, from storyboard to filming to editing.

The next day they went to Magic Kingdom, where they learned about Light and Sound. They even got to go backstage beneath the Haunted Mansion to see how light is used to create the illusion of ghosts.

On the final day they went to EPCOT, where they learned about different career paths and options. Everyone learned a lot and had a great experience.

Chief Noriega hands out a back pack

On Monday, August 17, PAL hosted its Annual Back to School Fair where 500 back packs filled with school supplies were given to kids. PAL also provided pizza and drinks and the event was a huge success!  Over 300 parents and children showed up to pick up the much needed back to school supplies and back packs. The rest will be distributed to local Miami Beach area schools.

The previous day YDC and Explorer kids spent the afternoon preparing the back packs, forming an assembly line to pack all 500 bags.

A special thanks to the YDC and Explorer kids for their assistance in the event and giving back to the community in which they live.  Also Lori Freedline, Ken Stowe, Jane Greenberg, Dov Knoetz, Karen Frye, Joey Daoud, Traci Sierra, Pete Socarras and Glaister who all assisted with registration, assembly, passing out the bags and clean up.  Thanks to Chief Noriega and Asst. Chief Martinez for their support and assistance.
